Hodder & Stoughton has landed Mad Honey, the “powerful and thought-provoking" new novel from Jodi Picoult (pictured, above left) and Jennifer Finney Boylan.
Managing director Carolyn Mays acquired British and Commonwealth rights, excluding Australia and New Zealand, from Laura Gross at The Laura Gross Literacy Agency. Mad Honey will publish in hardback, e-book and audiobook November 2022.
Picoult is the author of 25 novels, with more than 40 million copies sold worldwide, according to the publisher. Five of her novels have been made into movies, with Between the Lines (Hodder & Stoughton), co-written with Picoult’s daughter Samantha van Leer, adapted into a musical.
Boylan is the author of 17 works of fiction and non-fiction, including She’s Not There: A Life in Two Genders (Crown). She is a trans activist and a professor at Barnard College.
Describing Mad Honey, the publisher wrote: “Olivia fled her abusive marriage to return to her hometown and take over the family beekeeping business when her son Asher was six. Now, impossibly, her baby is over six feet tall and in his last year of high school, a kind, good-looking, popular ice hockey star with a tiny sprite of a new girlfriend whom Olivia adores. Then Olivia gets a phone call – Lily is dead, and Asher is arrested on a charge of murder. As the case against him unfolds, she realises he has hidden more than he’s shared with her. What was the truth of their relationship?”
Mays commented: “This extraordinary novel about what we choose to keep from our past and what we choose to leave behind moved me almost unbearably and had me riveted from beginning to end. Jodi Picoult has had 17 number one UK bestsellers, and now in this collaboration with Jennifer Finney Boylan, together they have given us the most compelling challenging and contemporary novel you will read this year. And I guarantee it will start some conversations we really need to have.”
