Hodder & Stoughton has acquired “Strictly Come Dancing” star Johannes Radebe’s autobiography.
Lauren Whelan, publisher at Hodder Non-Fiction, bought world rights from Antony Read at Olivia Bell Management. Jojo: Finally Home will publish in hardback, e-book and audio, read by the author, on 7th September 2023.
Radebe is a champion Latin and Ballroom dancer and one of the nation’s favourite professionals on "Strictly Come Dancing". The publisher said: “His mesmerising talent has brought joy to millions of ’Strictly’ fans and wowed even the most critical of judges. Johannes – known affectionately as Jojo – is loved not only for his dancing, but for his passion and warmth away from the dancefloor too."
Its synopsis adds: “This is the story of Johannes’ life and how it was completely transformed by dance. It’s the story of a boy whose talent and work ethic took him from Zamdela, the South African township where his journey began, to becoming one of the most exciting stars on our TV screen. Jojo writes beautifully and movingly about his early struggles with his sexuality and how he found first safety, and then a passport to a new life, in the dance studio.”
Radebe said: “This really is a dream come true for me. Not only have I found myself in places I never thought possible through my dancing, but now I am sharing my story with the world in book form. That journey has sometimes been hard but it has led me to my truth, my tribe and now I can say I’m finally home.
“I hope this book spreads joy and brings a message of hope to anyone who reads it. May it leave you with many experiences and feeling exhilarated at the end. Let it activate the spirit of empathy, love and compassion towards one another. Love Jojo.”
Whelan said: “The response to the acquisition of Jojo’s book internally has already been incredible and it is no wonder why. It is almost impossible not to fall head over heels for Johannes – unbelievably talented and the hardest worker, but also humble, open, passionate, and a joy to be around. Although it will shine light on the never-before-told realties and obstacles of his rise to stardom up to this point, it will also be a major celebration of his triumphs, an inspiration to many and a feel-good read. We’re all so excited and proud at Hodder to be publishing it (and hopefully getting some dance lessons)!”
