Hodderscape has pre-empted M Stevenson’s romantasy Behooved in a six-figure deal.
Editor Calah Singleton acquired UK and Commonwealth rights for two books from Maddy Belton at Madeleine Milburn Literary Agency. North American rights went to Lindsey Hall at Bramble in a "major" three-book deal. Hall said the "whole team here at Bramble are champing at the bit to share this very special story". Rights have also been sold in four other territories. Hodderscape will publish in May 2025.
Behooved tells the story of Bianca, a noblewoman with a chronic illness who is forced into an arranged marriage with Prince Aric, who would rather be in a library than on the throne. A magical mishap in an assassination attempt turns Aric into a horse and Biana rides away to safety. Restored to his human form after sunset, the pair discover the attempt on Aric’s life was part of a larger plot against the throne and Bianca has been framed for his murder.
Stevenson commented: "Behooved is my love letter to romantic fantasy, fairy tales, and girls with chronic illnesses who deserve to have their own fun magical adventures. I’m beyond thrilled that it will be joining the Hodderscape and Tor herds next year."
Singleton added: "Behooved is an absolute romp: twisty, witty, full of heart and endlessly romantic. Everyone at Hodderscape is so excited to bring UK readers along for the ride."
