Hot Key Books has acquired the rights to the new “tearjerker” novel from If I Stay author Gayle Forman. Emma Matthewson, executive publisher at Hot Key Books, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to After Life including ebook and audio from Tracy Williams at New Leaf Literary.
It explores the porous veil between life and death and “examines the impact that one person can have on the world, celebrating life in all its beautiful complexity”.
The synopsis reads: “One spring afternoon after school, Amber arrives home on her bike. It’s just another perfectly normal day. But when Amber’s mother sees her, she screams. Because Amber died seven years ago.”
Forman said: “The seeds of After Life reach back to something I wrote in the author’s note to If I Stay about how love never dies so long as you hold on to it. I wanted to explore that idea via a story about an everygirl who dies – and comes back – and the impact she’s had on those around her. I couldn’t be happier to have this special book land with Emma and Hot Key.”
Matthewson said: “I felt transported by After Life. Gayle has evoked the rippling outward circles of grief so movingly. With hope, humour and wise words carefully nestled in among the sorrow, this is a book to keep close for when you are most in need.”
After Life will be publishing on 7th January 2025 in paperback.
