Hot Key Books has snapped up a “charming” rivals-to-lovers romance The Funny Thing About Love, by author and journalist Tom Ellen, set in the world of comedy TV.
Ella Whiddett, commissioning editor, acquired English UK and Commonwealth rights from Clare Wallace at Darley Anderson Children’s Book Agency. It will publish in July 2024.
The synopsis reads: “Nell has snagged a highly sought-after internship writing for her favourite comedy sketch show, ‘Punching Up’. But the cut-throat world of television is no laughing matter, and Nell hasn’t banked on there being another intern to compete against for the job at the end. Especially one like Charlie, who is infuriatingly good-looking and a total nepo baby, gifted the opportunity by his executive producer father. With the odds stacked against her, Nell vows to do everything she can to out-perform him. But as she gets to know Charlie, she discovers there’s more to her workplace rival than meets the eye.”
Ellen said: “Sketch comedy has always been an obsession of mine, so writing a book set in a TV sketch show writers’ room has been a dream come true (not to mention an excellent excuse to rewatch lots of old ‘Saturday Night Live’ episodes for research). I am thrilled to be working with the brilliant team at Hot Key – and particularly with Ella, whose insight, guidance and enthusiasm has been fantastic.”
Whiddett added: “I am always looking for a brilliant rom-com, but most especially if it’s written by Tom, whose big-hearted humour, quick wit and gorgeous characters I’ve admired for years. It’s been such a treat to work on Nell and Charlie’s love story with him, and I just know it will have readers swooning – and giggling!”
