HarperCollins has acquired writer, performer, director and social activist Athena Stevens’ memoir, What’s Done Cannot Be Undone.
Managing director and publisher Lisa Milton acquired world all-language rights directly from the author, and the book will be published on 5th June 2025 in hardback, e-book, audiobook and trade paperback.
The synopsis states: "Athena Stevens has never learned the name of the doctor whose lack of intervention at her birth lead to her cerebral palsy, but she feels the consequences of his actions – and inaction – every day. The factor observed first and foremost in her life will forever be the effects of what other people have done to her, rather than her accomplishments. And yet, she was groomed to believe that she would overcome any force that stood in her way."
The blurb adds: "This complex, lyrical, gut-punch of a memoir delves into the reality that, for every action there is an equal, opposite reaction, and that changing the world single-handedly is as impossible as defying the laws of physics."
Milton added: "I’ve long admired Athena’s extraordinary skills as a writer, and her debut book is truly breathtaking. Through her unflinching prose and subversion of form, What’s Done Cannot Be Undone really is a memoir like no other. Athena’s words linger in the mind long after the final page."
Stevens added: "This is not an ‘inspiration’ story about overcoming adversity; it explores the profound ways our lives intersect and how we bear the consequences of others’ actions. My life began with medical malpractice, which has had an enduring impact on every corner of my existence. With this book, I aim to fill a gap in storytelling – crafting a literary narrative that engages with universal themes of accountability, connection and meaning, offering the depth and complexity often missing in stories like mine."
