HQ has snapped up The Red House, a "high-concept" standalone thriller from Roz Watkins, author of the DI Meg Dalton series.
Emily Kitchin, editorial director, acquired world English language rights, from Diana Beaumont at Marjacq Literary Agency. The book will be published in June 2023.
"Roz Watkins is a brilliant writer, beloved by readers and her peers alike," said Beaumont. "The Red House demonstrates that she is at the top of her game with its powerful premise, unforgettable central protagonist and strong sense of place."
The Red House "tells the story of the infamous Red House killings, when 15-year-old Joseph Flowers shockingly murdered his parents and baby brother in cold blood whilst his young sister Eve hid". The publisher continued: "Now an adult, Eve is determined to find out why Joseph killed her family. When disturbing new evidence about the murders comes to light, she’s forced to re-examine her memories of that day."
Watkins said: "I’m thrilled to be working with Emily and the brilliant HQ team again. Emily is a fantastic editor and the team at HQ has such passion and ambition for their books and authors. I’m delighted that they’re as excited about The Red House as I am."
Kitchin added: "Roz is a top-class suspense writer, and to see her move from series crime to this powerful, gut-punching standalone is incredibly exciting. With its compelling hook and gripping twists and turns, the tension in The Red House is sky-high from the very first page. My nails had been bitten to the quick by the time the final shocking revelations were unveiled! At HQ we are so delighted to publish Roz, and to work with her on this thrilling next step in her career."
