HQ has scooped the “thought-provoking and gripping” third novel by Christine Dalcher, author of VOX (also HQ).
Senior commissioning editor Cicely Aspinall acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, for Femlandia from Tawanna Sullivan at Berkley PRH US. It will be published in hardback, e-book and audio on 14th October 2021.
Femlandia is billed as another cautionary dystopian thriller from the author, whose debut VOX was published in 2018, going on to sell 200,000 copies across all editions according to HQ and winning the 2019 Goldsboro Glass Bell Award. Through Nielsen BookScan, VOX shifted 77,933 copies in paperback and 10,153 in hardback. Dalcher’s second novel, Q, is published by HQ in paperback today (7th January).
The new book's blurb reads: “In a United States that has suffered total economic collapse, Miranda Reynolds has lost her husband, her job and her home. With the world outside becoming increasing dangerous, there is one last place she and her daughter Emma could go – Femlandia. Set up two decades earlier, Femlandias are female-only communities designed to be utopias for women. But how can a society exist independently of men? Only when she’s inside the gates does Miranda finally understand the dark secrets within.”
Aspinall said: “VOX marked a new wave of female-centric dystopian fiction and Femlandia proves that Christina Dalcher is the incomparable master of the genre. The Road for a new generation, this is a story about mothers and daughters, and an explosively provocative thriller that has its finger on the pulse of our increasingly divided world. Unputdownable doesn’t even begin to cover it.”
Dalcher added: “They say good things happen in threes, and it’s true! I’m beyond delighted to be working once again with the team at HQ on my third novel. Every author should have such an enthusiastic advocate behind her work.”
