Hutchinson Heinemann has signed political commentator and co-presenter of the “The Rest is Politics” podcast Alastair Campbell’s’ “call to arms to revive politics”.
Nigel Wilcockson, associate publisher at Cornerstone, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to But What Can I Do? from Jonny Geller at Curtis Brown. The book will be published in physical, e-book and audio editions on 15th June 2023.
The synopsis reads: “In recent years, the world of politics has taken a series of disastrous wrong turns. We have witnessed leaders who can’t – or shouldn’t be allowed to – lead, policies that are either self-serving or don’t work, and world views that are corrosive or short term.
“Alastair Campbell’s aim in But What Can I Do? is twofold: to explain why things have gone so wrong, and to show what we can do to help put them right. A mix of polemic, analysis, practical advice and clarion call, this is a political masterclass from an eminent political commentator and strategist at the top of his game.”
Campbell said the title of the book comes from a question he gets asked “again and again” by people “desperate for change but unsure how to bring it about".
“I can’t claim to have all of the answers, but I hope in both the analysis and some of the suggested solutions I can inspire people to get involved and shake up politics. If we disengage the charlatans win. And they have done enough damage for now,” he said.
Wilcockson added: “There is no more acute, or acerbic, commentator on the current state of our politics than Alastair. There is also no one better placed to show us how we can fix things. His new book is both a warning and an inspiring and empowering call to arms.”
