Hutchinson Heinemann has secured Carrie Soto is Back, the new novel of ambition, rivalry and female icons from Taylor Jenkins Reid.
Publishing director Ailah Ahmed acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Julian Alexander at The Soho Agency, on behalf of Theresa Park and Abigail Koons at Park & Fine. The novel will be published in hardback, e-book and audio on 30th August 2022.
Reid is the author of the Sunday Times bestseller Malibu Rising (Cornerstone) and the TikTok “sensation” The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (Simon & Schuster). Carrie Soto is Back is described as a “riveting and unforgettable novel”, marking Reid’s “most vulnerable, emotional story yet”.
The synopsis reads: “Carrie Soto is fierce, and her determination to win at any cost has not made her popular. But by the time she retires from tennis, she is the best player the world has ever seen. She has shattered every record and claimed 20 Grand Slam titles. And if you ask Carrie, she is entitled to every one. She sacrificed nearly everything to become the best, with her father as her coach. Javier—a former champion himself—has trained her since the age of two.
“But six years after her retirement, Carrie finds herself sitting in the stands of the 1994 US Open, watching her record be taken from her by a brutal, stunning player named Nicki Chan. At 37 years old, Carrie makes the monumental decision to come out of retirement and be coached by her father for one last year in an attempt to reclaim her record. Even if the sports media says that they never liked the ’Battle-Axe’ anyway. Even if her body doesn’t move as fast as it did. And even if it means swallowing her pride to train with a man she once almost opened her heart to: Bowe Huntley. Like her, he has something to prove before he gives up the game forever.”
Ahmed said: “2022 is the year of Taylor Jenkins Reid! She is loved by readers all around the world. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a TikTok phenomenon, Daisy Jones and the Six is poised to be an Amazon series and Malibu Rising spent 12 weeks in the UK bestseller chart. In Carrie Soto is Back, Reid has created her most delicious, enigmatic and unforgettable character yet.”
Reid commented: “I am thrilled to be able to release Carrie Soto is Back with Hutchinson Heinemann. Carrie Soto has a soft spot for London and a preternatural skill on the grass courts of Wimbledon—so I’m especially excited to share the story with UK readers.”
