Hutchinson Heinemann has acquired a celebration of London’s suburbs from Simon Pollock, the creator of the Instagram @londonsuburbia.
Publisher Helen Conford acquired world rights to I Love Suburbia at auction from Jack Fogg at the Dunn Fogg Agency, with Vanessa Phan as editor, following a two-way auction. The book will be published in September 2024.
Hutchinson Heinemann said: “From stations that wouldn’t be out of place in Miami Beach to cinemas converted to megachurches, I Love Suburbia brings to life the joys of living outside Zone 1.
“Filled with stories of the people who live, work and play in the outskirts of London, this full-colour book is an exploration of the capital’s overlooked everyday treasures.
“With more than 200 original photos of unusual charm from Chingford to Leatherhead, Beaconsfield to Becontree, I Love Suburbia invites readers to step back in time, to discover the pioneering interwar architects who brought modernism to Britain, and delight in the elegance of art deco buildings given a new lease of life.”
Conford said: “As a long-time fan of Simon’s Instagram, I am thrilled we’re publishing I Love Suburbia. A visually stunning book filled with delightful facts, this book is truly one-of-a-kind and I’m excited for readers to discover places old and new with Simon.”
Phan said: “I Love Suburbia is a truly captivating romp around London that without fail brings a smile to my face. Simon’s warmth and humour shines through every page and it’s a gorgeous collectible that I can’t wait to publish.
Pollock, whose Instagram account @londonsuburbia has more than 85,000 followers, said: “It’s a privilege to be able to share photos and stories of the wonderful buildings that many of us grew up with and which mean so much to us. This book is a love letter to the suburbs and the people who were raised and live there, a positive look at life on the outskirts that I hope will take the reader back to simpler, more innocent time.”
