Influx Press has returned from a hiatus with the acquisition of Nour Abi-Nakhoul’s debut literary horror, Supplication.
Co-founder Gary Budden acquired UK rights from Catherine Ryoo at Penguin Random House Canada for publication on 6th June 2024.
The independent publisher announced earlier this year it would be ending its acquisitions hiatus after a "necessary period of rest and reflection". Budden is now spearheading the new list and new direction of the press.
Supplication follows a woman tied to a chair in a basement with a man looming over her. The story follows her as "she emerges from captivity into an unnamed, nightmarish city, seeking some meaning to her new reality. As figures emerge from the night, some offering sanctuary, and others judgement, she keeps moving, making her way through this fever dream of a narrative".
Budden said: "As soon as I started reading Supplication, I knew I wanted Influx to publish it in the UK – Nour’s distinct and powerful authorial voice was immediately apparent, with this nightmarish and phantasmagoric novel fitting perfectly with Influx’s remit to publish innovative and challenging new voices from all backgrounds."
Abi-Nakhoul added: "I’m really excited to be published by Influx Press in the UK; their history of putting out eccentric, boundary-crossing books has made them a necessary fixture in the country’s literary scene and I can’t imagine a better fit for Supplication. I’m looking forward to how this publication will place Supplication in conversation with some incredible works of contemporary UK fiction and hope that the novel will be able to contribute something special to the literary landscape of the country."
