James Patterson and President Bill Clinton are collaborating on a third novel, to be published by Century.
The novel will be published jointly by Century, Penguin Random House UK and in the US by Alfred A Knopf and Little, Brown on 2nd June 2025.
Venetia Butterfield, divisional managing director at Penguin Random House UK,
acquired UK and Commonwealth (excluding Canada) and exclusive European rights to The First Gentleman. The deal was struck with Robert Barnett and Deneen Howell of Williams & Connolly.
The novel will be published by Century in hardcover, e-book, and audiobook on Monday 2nd June 2025, with a simultaneous release in North America.
The First Gentleman will be a standalone novel – not a sequel – with new and original characters. It follows the president’s husband who goes on trial for murder. The publisher said that "like their previous collaborations, the story will be told with Patterson’s signature suspense and will be informed by details that only a president can know".

President Clinton said: "Jim and I always have a great time writing together, but we’re admittedly pretty tough on our fictional presidents. We’ve sent one chief executive into hiding to stop a global terror attack, and thrust another into a deadly firefight to protect his family. In our new book, we really take the gloves off. I hope this one is as much fun to read as it was to write."
Patterson said: “President Clinton and I have written a couple of well-received thrillers so far. But The First Gentleman is at a whole new level. When we first got writing – two presidential administrations ago – we simply could not have dreamt this one up."
