John Murray has acquired Natalie Livingstone’s The Nuremberg Women: Justice, Journalism and the Most Famous Trial of the 20th Century.
Jocasta Hamilton, executive publisher, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Caroline Michel at PFD for “a strong five figures”.
The publisher said: “As the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, Livingstone was always aware that the crimes brought to trial in Nuremberg were as relevant to women’s history as men’s. Yet women seemed to be absent at the trials. Then she discovered that on the same estate that a great number of famous male writers were housed in a castle, there was a second building, where women journalists were accommodated in ramshackle bunkrooms, sharing each other’s scoops, and vodka, while debating the biggest issues of the day. Through the stories of the women who stayed at the Faber Villa, she discovered a gaping absence in the trial’s history.”
The Nuremberg Women follows six witnesses to the trial – Janet Flanner, Martha Gellhorn, Laura Knight, Erika Mann, Sigrid Schultz and Rebecca West.
Livingstone said: “The trials are traditionally associated with a roll call of famous men, but this is only half the story. In a small villa on the edge of Nuremberg, a group of fearless, bold and brilliant female writers were making history.”
Hamilton added: “With The Mistresses of Cliveden and The Women of Rothschild, Livingstone has demonstrated her talent for bringing the extraordinary stories of overlooked women into the light and making us see society, history and politics in a fresh way. The Nuremberg Women combines the intimate lives, loves and struggles of trailblazing women with a pivotal moment of the 20th century. We will publish in 2026 to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the trials.”
