John Murray Press will publish political journalist Marie le Conte's Honourable Misfits: A Brief History of Britain’s Weirdest, Unluckiest and Most Outrageous MPs in July 2021.
Honourable Misfits is described as a "colourful compendium of British parochial political nuttiness" and will feature thumbnail portraits of the forgotten "oddballs and eccentrics" of parliaments past. It will range from the MP who built a complex network of tunnels and underground rooms underneath his estate, to the one who liked to go hunting naked, to another who set himself on fire to cure his hiccups, and one MP who invented a very small gun with which to kill flies.
Editorial director Joe Zigmond acquired world rights from Imogen Pelham at Marjacq. John Murray will publish in hardback, e-book and audio on 22nd July 2021.
Zigmond said: "Welcome back to the world of rotten boroughs, gout and gall. In these glorious pen portraits of the forgotten oddballs and eccentrics of parliaments past, Marie’s book tells us how much public life has changed, and, awkwardly, how it hasn’t. We cannot wait to unleash her perfectly captured wrong ’uns on readers this summer."
Le Conte published Haven't You Heard with Bonnier imprint 535 in 2019. She has written for the Evening Standard, BuzzFeed News, GQ, the Guardian and the New Statesman.
