John Murray, an imprint of John Murray Press, has acquired Interesting Stories about Curious Words by Susie Dent, “a literary treasure-trove packed with amazing words and their unforgettable stories".
Georgina Laycock, non-fiction publisher, acquired world rights from Rosemary Scoular at United Agents. Publication is scheduled for 28th September.
In the book, the publisher says, “Dent explores the bizarre, human histories behind ‘sweet Fanny Adams’ and ‘Jack the Lad’.”
It asks: how did circles become vicious? Who was Hobson and what was his choice? What is the heroic story behind Chance One’s Arm? What did Nelson turn a blind eye to?
“From the days of the week to the letters of the alphabet, you’ll never look at the words we use every day in the same way,” the publisher says. “Join Britain’s best-loved word expert and lexicographer extraordinaire on a curious and exceedingly interesting adventure through all the very best red herrings, cock and bull stories and nine-day wonders in the English language this autumn."
Laycock said: “There are enough amazing true stories here to fuel a thousand conversations. If you love words, you will adore this book."
Dent, the resident word expert in Dictionary Corner on C4’s ”Countdown” and "8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown”, commented: “It’s been a delight to gather together my favourite etymological stories in one volume. It’s given me a chance to share the extraordinary adventures of our language that have surprised, tickled, shocked and entertained me for years.”
