John Murray has snapped up Uncommon People: Britpop and Beyond in 20 Songs by journalist Miranda Sawyer.
Publisher Georgina Laycock acquired world rights from Kirsty McLachlan at Morgan Green Creatives for publication in October 2024.
A "fascinating pop history" exploration of the Britpop musical movement, Uncommon People explores 90s British music through 20 "key" songs, the "surprising stories behind them and their unlikely creators".
"This book re-lives the mad exhilaration of what it was like to hear these songs for the very first time — and what it was like to make them," wrote the publisher. "Packed with amazing new interviews, and I-was-there insights, Uncommon People offers a backstage pass to all the most interesting bits of Britpop’s greatest hits."
Laycock said: "Somehow Miranda has managed to squeeze the best and most creative musical moments and makers of the 90s into one hugely enjoyable book. Uncommon People is a book for everyone who was there and everyone who wished they were. It’s a literary Glastonbury ticket — without mud, hangovers and dodgy tents."
Sawyer added: "I’m surprised at how much I have enjoyed delving back into my past! Back to a time when interesting outsiders in second-hand blouses, old sportswear and bovver boots used their fantastic tunes and considerable charm to smash into the centre of UK culture and completely change it. Even if you don’t like all the bands, you’ll love the mixtape."
