Jonathan Cape has snapped up Family Relations, the debut novel from Rebecca Ivory and a collection of stories entitled Free Therapy.
Željka Marošević, editorial director, acquired British Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, at auction from Angelique Tran Van Sang at Felicity Bryan Associates. Free Therapy will be published in spring 2024 with the novel following after.
Free Therapy is a "wry and perfectly-observed" collection about familial, platonic and romantic relationships. The collection includes nine short stories which use "therapeutic practices as a lens through which to view the world and expand the short story form". The publisher added: "Free Therapy is about people who know what they need to do in order to be happy, but can’t quite bring themselves to do it; people who are driven by desires that don’t quite match with what they’re looking for in life; people who long to connect with others, but can’t seem to allow themselves to."
Family Relations opens in 1980s Dublin following a single family.
Ivory said: "I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Željka and the team at Jonathan Cape on this collection. I’m very grateful that Željka understood and shared the vision I have for the stories. And as always, I am so grateful to my wonderful agent, Angelique, for all of her encouragement and support throughout this process.’
Marošević added: "Free Therapy is an astonishing first collection; reading it created new spaces in my mind, like opening doors to rooms I hadn’t entered before. I love the generosity and psychological insight with which Rebecca approaches her characters, and the wisdom and sympathy she brings to their lives. I’m delighted to be publishing her at Cape and Vintage."
