The Quarto Group's Frances Lincoln Children’s Books imprint has added US vice-president-elect Kamala Harris to its Little People, Big Dreams list for 2021.
Harris made history last week as she became the first woman and woman of colour elected to the position of vice-president in the US. Her "strength of character, progressive outlook and strive for change" fits with the ethos of the series, says the publisher.
Katy Flint, commissioning editor and brand manager for Little People, Big Dreams, commented: "Little People, Big Dreams has always celebrated ground-breaking women who made history, and we are thrilled to honour Kamala Harris in the series. As the vice-president-elect, she spoke to children everywhere with her inspirational message that she ‘may be the first, but she will not be the last’."
The 2021 series will also include the youngest Nobel Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai in March, former US first lady Michelle Obama in July, and the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg in August.
Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara, author of the popular children's series, said about the 2021 list: "It’s a thrill to know that children today are seeing these women make history. History is not just written in history books. A new page is written every single day, out of millions of small individual achievements. Sometimes, these achievements happen to become huge and touch so many people’s lives and hearts that they become inspiring stories worth telling about. Not in years, but now."
