Kirsty Logan’s second novel, The Gloaming, is publishing with Harvill Secker in May next year.
Liz Foley, publishing director at Harvill Secker, acquired UK, Commonwealth and European rights (excluding Canada), from Cathryn Summerhayes at Curtis Brown.
The acquisition was announced last night (20th March) at an event hosted by Vintage in Glasgow for Waterstones booksellers, during which Logan read from the opening of her new novel. It will be published by Harvill Secker in May 2018.
Following Logan's 2015-published debut The Gracekeepers, also published by Harvill Secker, The Gloaming draws on themes of love, grief and fairytales as "a bewitching, sultry tale of first love, shattering grief, and the dangerous magic that draws us home".
Its protagonists, boxer Peter and ballerina Signe, together take their family to a remote and otherworldly Scottish Island, where their children grow up happily in the enchanted and idyllic place - until one morning tragedy strikes. When the family is fragmented, the middle daughter, Mara, has to find a way to piece them back together. And when she meets a beautiful young woman visiting the island, she undergoes her own transformation.
Foley said: "It’s a pleasure to be bewitched by Kirsty’s writing again in The Gloaming. There are so many unforgettable scenes in her moving story of this unusual family. We can’t wait to start sharing our enthusiasm for this wonderful book with her fans and new readers alike."
