Knights Of has snapped up Radhika Sanghani’s debut YA novel, Here To Slay.
It will be Knights Of’s lead YA launch for 2024, and is billed as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” meets Indian mythology.
Editorial director Eishar Brar acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Chloe Seager at Madeleine Milburn. It will publish 5th September 2024 in paperback original.
Here To Slay follows Kali, “who has a lot to deal with – her crush doesn’t notice her, her parents love her cousin more, and a big family wedding is overshadowing her 16th birthday”. The publisher said: “To top it all, a demon appears in her bedroom; it turns out that all girls named after the demon-fighting goddess Kali are imbued with special powers to fight demons, and the fate of the world rests in her hands. With the cool, confident K on hand to teach her how to be a demon slayer, she isn’t alone – but will she be able to save the world and slay at life?”
Sanghani added: "Here To Slay is a coming-of-age story that’s inspired by both my love of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and my fascination with Hindu mythology surrounding the goddess Kali. As soon as I came up with the idea, I knew that Knights Of was the perfect home for it.”
Brar added: “Radhika’s queer Indian girls fighting demons and family expectations are so funny and loveable. I truly can’t wait for this book to reach readers in September.”
Sanghani is an award-winning features journalist, author, screenwriter, body positivity campaigner and a 2020 BBC Writers Room graduate. She writes regularly for the Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail, Elle, Guardian, Grazia, Glamour and Cosmopolitan. Her middle-grade debut The Girl Who Couldn’t Lie (Usborne) publishes May 2024.
