Kyle Books has acquired Expressions: Art in Pastry by Julie Jones, chef and author of two previous books, Soulful Baker (Jacqui Small) and The Pastry School (Kyle Books).
Joanna Copestick, publisher at Kyle Books, bought world language rights directly from the author. Expressions, which begins with a collection of both sweet and salted shortcrust pastry recipes that lead the way to many variations throughout the book, will be published on 29th September 2022.
The “groundbreaking” book contains chapters on fruit, meat and fish, vegetables, dairy and cheese. It includes 40 recipes that can all be adapted to a huge variety of decorative approaches. Recipes include a linear fruit pie, a cheese lattice pie, a pumpkin baked pastry tile pie and a carrot and courgette ribbons pie.
Every chapter includes “exquisite” photography by Andrew Montgomery of both the food and the inspiration behind each dish.
Copestick said: “This is truly a groundbreaking book, where pastry meets art. Julie has long been asked how she comes up with her pie designs so here at last she explains her sources of inspiration, her decorative techniques and her most creative fillings and toppings, so you too can get creative in the kitchen.”
Jones is a trained chef who has appeared on BBC’s "Yes Chef" with Pierre Koffman, "Nadiya Bakes", ITV’s "Beautiful Baking" with Juliet Sear and BBC Radio Four’s "The Food Programme". In 2018 she won the Observer Food Monthly Best Instagram Feed and Waitrose Food Magazine has named her as one of the UK’s most influential bakers.
She said: “This book was such a pleasure to bring together, being able to soak up the inspiration that is all around us and relate it to my own work. Inspiration really is everywhere, whether that be through the gift of others or through nature. What a truly wonderful world we live in. If we let the beauty in.”
