The producers of "Fleabag", Two Brothers Pictures, have optioned TV rights to Laura Bates’ Sisters of Sword and Shadow which was published by Simon & Schuster in November.
Rights were acquired from Sarah Williams at Independent Talent on behalf of Abigail Bergstrom at Bergstrom Studio. The commercial fantasy has sold in three languages and was selected as one of Waterstones Best YA Books of 2023. The second book in the sequel will be published in October 2024.
Sisters of Sword and Shadow is an immersive alternative Arthurian legend, exploring what might happen if the fellowship of the round table had an all-female counterpart. Cass, destined for marriage, is whisked away by a mysterious woman on horseback and introduced to the Fellowship of the Silk Knights, a secret group of women working to protect a people plagued by the wars of men. Drawn into a world of ancient feuds, glorious battles and deadly intrigue, Cass soon discovers she holds a power that could change the destiny of her sisterhood.
Two Brothers Pictures is a British production company founded by brothers Jack and Harry Williams known for hits such as "Fleabag" and "The Missing".
A spokesperson said: “We are delighted to have gained the rights to Sisters of Sword and Shadow. It’s a great book with a proud feminist heart, and we are happy to be working with Laura to bring the story to screen.”
Bates said: “I knew from the very first meeting with Two Brothers that they were the perfect team for this project – I loved their vision, enthusiasm and fierce sense of feminist joy. With previous hits like ’Fleabag’ exploring all the nuances and taboos of women’s lives, I’d long admired them, so working with them on this project is a dream come true.”
