Lightning Books has hooked Future Fish, the comic debut from ex-animal rights activist Conor Sneyd.
Publisher Dan Hiscocks acquired world rights directly from the author. The novel will be published in paperback and e-book in March 2023.
Sneyd’s "deliciously daft comic caper" follows Mark, a "hapless" young Dubliner who has been hired as a customer service assistant for Ireland’s second largest pet food manufacturer. The synopsis continued: "He is soon entangled with a ragtag bag of exorcists, alien-hunters and animal rights warriors, all of whom are convinced the company is harbouring some dastardly secret. Why are these crackpots so keen to get close to Mark? And will their schemes ruin his career prospects?"
Inspired by Sneyd’s time working as an environmental and animal rights activist, his novel "perfectly captures the powerlessness of a low-rung office life as well as the seductive zealotry", the publisher said.
Simon Edge, senior editor, commented: "This gloriously silly, gossamer-light novel is beautifully written and constructed. Like all the best comic novelists, Conor Sneyd makes the craft look easy when it’s nothing of the kind. There’s also a lot of heart in this tale, which is all about making peace with the madness of the modern world. We’re delighted to be publishing it."
Sneyd added: "Working with the team at Lightning Books has been an absolute pleasure. From the start, they’ve understood my vision for Future Fish, and they’ve gone above and beyond to help shape it into the slickest, silliest book it can be."
