Stripes Publishing, an imprint of the Little Tiger Group, has acquired a work of speculative fiction, set after the outbreak of a deadly tick-borne disease, by debut author Nicola Penfold.
Where the World Turns Wild is set in the near future where people live in strictly monitored concrete cities because of the outbreak of disease 50 years earlier. When the city’s health board find out that two siblings, Juniper and Bear, carry the key to fighting the disease in their blood, the pair flee into the wild.
The book was shortlisted for the first Joan Aiken Future Classics Prize in 2017 under the title Return to the Wild and was selected for SCBWI’s 2018 Undiscovered Voices anthology.
Commissioning editor Katie Jennings acquired world rights in a two-book deal from Gillie Russel of talent agency Found.
Jennings said: “Where the World Turns Wild is a thought-provoking and thrilling novel that is set to become a future classic. The all-too-believable future Nicola creates really got under my skin from the moment I read the opening chapters of her book in last year’s Undiscovered Voices anthology. I just had to find out more about Juniper and Bear’s escape from their cage of a city and follow them on their journey out into the unknown.”
