Little Tiger has snapped up a “vibrant and uplifting” picture book from award-winning author and illustrator Harry Woodgate.
Isabel Otter, senior editor, acquired UK rights to Timid from Turid Weingartz at Little Bee Books. It will publish in paperback in November 2022.
Timid explores how to deal with shyness in a gentle and familiar way. The synopsis says: “When Timmy’s classmates begin to prepare for the school play, Timmy longs to be a part of the performance. However, their shy inner lion threatens to stop them from doing what they love. With some help from their friend, Nia, and a whole lot of bravery, will Timmy be able to strike up the courage to perform on stage?”
Otter said: “We are delighted to be the UK home for Timid. The story follows little Timmy (they/them), whose shyness and fear manifest as a roaring lion. One of the things I love about Timid is that the lion doesn’t vanish at the end. Instead, Timmy learns ways to cope with their shyness, rather than feeling that they need to vanquish it and reject that part of themselves. It’s a joyful, inclusive story with friendship at its heart and an empowering message about being yourself. And the illustrations are absolutely magical!”
Woodgate said: “I am absolutely ROARing with excitement that Little Tiger will be publishing the UK edition of Timid, a story about one very shy non-binary kid who, with a little help from a new friend, has to tame their inner cowardly lion in order to take part in the school play. This is a book which I hope will resonate with lots of young readers, and which features the kind of positive incidental representation that we really need in early years literature, so I’m thrilled it will be available here in the UK. It’s been lovely working with the team at Little Tiger and I couldn’t think of a better place for my big lion to call home!”
Woodgate’s debut Grandad’s Camper (Andersen Press) won Best Illustrated Book in the 2022 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize.
