Little Tiger has swiped Only This Beautiful Moment, a "mesmerising" intergenerational LGBTQ+ coming of age story from Abdi Nazemian.
Senior editor Mattie Whitehead acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Australia and New Zealand, from Charlotte Bodman at the Rights People on behalf of John Cusick and Chiara Panzeri at Folio Literary Management. The book will be published on 2nd November 2023.
Only This Beautiful Moment follows three generations of Iranian men: Moud in 2019 visiting his ill grandfather in Iran, Moud’s father Saeed who is forced to flee to America in 1979 and Moud’s grandfather Bobby, a child actor in 1930s Hollywood. The novel is "an ode to the fragile bonds of family, the hidden secrets of history and all the beautiful moments that make us who we are today".
"From the first line I was gripped by Moud, Saeed and Bobby’s stories," said Whitehead. "Abdi’s writing is beautiful, heart-wrenching and hopeful, thoughtfully combining romance, friendship and family dynamics while exploring American and Iranian history. I feel so lucky to be bringing this story to readers in the UK so they can share these characters’ journeys too."
Nazemian said: "I can’t contain my excitement at having a novel out in the UK. This is an ode to family, specifically to the powerful bonds between fathers and sons. My own father went to both boarding school and college in London, and I’ve since become an Anglophile who does a lot of my own writing, including much of this novel, in London. I can’t wait to visit and hopefully see the novel on the shelves of my favourite bookshops like Foyle’s and Gay’s The Word, and I feel profoundly grateful to Mattie Whitehead and the whole Little Tiger team for believing in this intergenerational story, and helping it travel into the hands of new readers around the world."
Nazemian is has already had books published in the US. His third novel, Like a Love Story (Harperteen), received a Stonewall Honor and was among TIME’s 100 Best YA Books of All Time.
