Zaffre has acquired two new “warm and romantic” novels at auction from Lia Louis, author of a number of novels including Eight Perfect Hours, Somewhere Close to Happy and Dear Emmie Blue (Orion).
Sarah Bauer, editorial director for Zaffre, acquired UK & Commonwealth rights to Better Left Unsent and one other novel from Juliet Mushens of Mushens Entertainment following a three-way auction.
North American rights were previously sold to Emily Bestler at Emily Bestler Books and Jenny Bent at the Bent Agency. Better Left Unsent will be published in the UK in paperback original, audio and e-book in April 2024.
Zaffre said Better Left Unsent poses the “toe-curling” question: what if one day you woke to find all your draft emails had been sent? (Including that one love declaration meant for your ex-boyfriend, the only man you’ve ever loved.)
Louis’ romantic comedy follows receptionist Millie Chandler in the aftermath of a server outage at work where this very nightmare becomes a reality. As every truth, secret and darkest thought she’s worked so hard to password protect are catapulted out into the open, Millie must fix the chaos her words have caused, and face everything she’s ever swept under the carpet.
Bauer said: “Romcoms are having a moment and I know readers are really going to fall for this hilarious high-concept romantic comedy.”
Louis commented: “I feel so lucky to have such a dynamic team at the helm. It’s an absolute dream come true to be able to continue writing for readers, both old and new, and I can’t wait for Better Left Unsent to make its way into their hands.”
Mushens added: “Lia’s writing goes from strength to strength. There was so much passion for Lia’s work during the auction and I’m excited to see Bonnier Books UK build her further.”
