Lume Books has seized a two-book deal with Kate Braithwaite for the historical novel The Scandalous Life of Nancy Randolph and The Neighborhood, Braithwaite’s first thriller.
Head of publishing Aubrie Artiano acquired world English language rights directly from the author. The Scandalous Life of Nancy Randolph will be publishing in 2024 with the thriller novel to follow.
Set on a plantation in 18th-century Virginia, The Scandalous Life of Nancy Randolph is told from the perspective of three female characters, following Nancy Randolph as she moves from a privileged childhood to poverty and marriage to one of America’s founding fathers.
"It’s based on true events, but the historical record leaves more questions than answers about what really happened," said Braithwaite. "I’ve had a wonderful time filling in those gaps and am delighted to join forces with Lume Books to bring this dramatic tale to readers."
The Neighborhood is a "sharp and sinister" story about freelance writer Jen Silver and her partner Dan who is involved in the disappearance of Jen’s sister 20 years ago.
Artiano said: "We are thrilled to be working with Kate on The Scandalous Life of Nancy Randolph and The Neighborhood. Kate’s historical fiction is incredibly atmospheric and illuminating, and we can’t wait to introduce a new audience of thriller readers to her compelling, unputdownable style of writing."
