Lume Books has signed Jane McLoughlin’s supernatural thriller The Hollowing, scheduled for publication in October 2024.
Aubrie Artiano, head of publishing, acquired world English-language rights from Sallyanne Sweeney at Mulcahy Sweeney Associates.
The publisher describes The Hollowing as a modern-day Rebecca which explores the dark underside of marriage. The synopsis reads: “Jacey’s husband Rob declares his year’s academic exchange a new start, and the Gibsons arrive at their Victorian mansion in the South Downs full of hope. But Jacey soon feels isolated and experiences a frightening return of her childhood “hollowing” — a disorienting feeling of twisted sound and distorted air. Has Malin House brought this on? Rob’s callous behaviour? Or is it the pale little boy only Jacey can see?"
McLoughlin’s novels for young people have been nominated for various awards, including the Carnegie Medal, the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, and the Branford Boase Prize for debut writers. She said: “I’m very excited to be publishing my debut adult novel with Lume. I can’t wait to share with readers the mystery and anxiety that haunts Jacey Gibson, as she follows her academic husband from the USA to a new start in England, where her family’s past exerts a sinister force.”
Artiano said: “Jane’s writing is haunting and atmospheric. The Hollowing masterfully weaves together suspense, unexpected twists and compelling characters. We can’t wait to share this captivating story with our readers.”
Describing the book as “an unsettling and gripping exploration of marriage and the impossibility of new beginnings”, Sweeney said: “I’m delighted to be partnering with Lume Books and can’t wait for readers to discover The Hollowing next year.”
