Lume Books has signed a two-book deal with writer and dramaturg Sarah Sigal.
Aubrie Artiano, head of publishing, acquired worldwide English language rights for both novels from Gaia Banks at Sheil Land Associates. The first book in a new series, Murder à la Mode, will be published in November 2023.
Set in 1936 London, Sigal’s debut centres on Lady Pamela More, who pens the popular "Agent of Influence" column for the Times, writing wittily about all things fashion and society. Pamela is bright, capable and bored. Seeking something more challenging, she finds it unexpectedly: ideally placed to spy on Wallis Simpson and the King, she’s asked by the government to report on their fascist connections. Before long Pamela is on a course that changes not only her destiny but that of the country, navigating the currents of espionage, counter-espionage, and febrile pre-war politics, all the while maintaining the charming, stylish exterior that enables her to operate in plain sight.
Artiano said: “Dazzlingly witty, Sarah’s debut presents an impressive cast of characters set against the shadowy backdrop of 1930s London. Blending fact and fiction, Murder à la Mode features everything from aristocracy and fashion to culture and politics – with a few surprises along the way. We are thrilled to be working on such a brilliant new series.”
Sigal said: “I’m delighted to be publishing my debut novel Murder à la Mode after signing a two-book deal with Lume. It’s the first in a series featuring Lady Pamela More, a socialite-turned-spy tasked with trailing Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson in the murky world of espionage and fascism in 1930s London. I can’t wait to share Pamela and her world with readers.”
Banks said: “We were so impressed by the Lume team’s immediate enthusiasm for Sarah’s work and their vision of how they would publish. We can’t wait to see Murder à la Mode published on their beautifully curated list.”
