Pan Macmillan has acquired a biography from Judith Mackrell about "bold and brilliant" women who became war correspondents.
Non-fiction editorial director Georgina Morley acquired world English Language rights for Mackrell’s Going With the Boys, from Clare Alexander of Aitken Alexander. Publication is slated for the spring of 2021.
The book is a group biography of six women who became war correspondents in the Second World War: Virginia Cowles, Martha Gellhorn, Clare Hollingworth, Helen Kirkpatrick, Lee Miller and Sigrid Shultz.
Its author, who previously wrote Flappers (Macmillan) and The Unfinished Palazzo (Thames and Hudson), will draw on the women's own writings and images, as well as on contemporary memoirs, to describe the factors that drew them towards war, the challenges they faced and the triumphs they achieved.
According to Pan Macmillan, each woman will be portrayed "as nuanced, complicated individuals - as women, not just correspondents", but the book will also weave their stories into the larger narrative of the Second World War and wartime life.
Morley said: "Working with Judith on Flappers was a delight. She is a wonderfully nuanced and sensitive interpreter of the lives of complicated, interesting women and I am certain that Going with the Boys, focusing as it does on a group of extremely interesting and very complicated women, will reach a very wide readership indeed."
