Magic Cat continues Brown Bear Wood series with Piercey and Hartas
Magic Cat has snapped up Grand Old Oak and the Birthday Ball, a continuation of the Brown Bear Wood series from Rachel Piercey and illustrator Freya Hartas.
Rachel Williams, joint managing director and co-publisher, acquired world rights directly from Piercey and from Doreen Thorogood at Good Illustration for Hartas. It will be published in spring 2023, marking the three-year anniversary of Magic Cat’s first publication.
According to the publisher, the Brown Bear Wood series has been published in 27 languages with more than 250,000 copies in print. The series, which began with If You Go Down to the Woods Today, is now an “established classic” on Magic Cat’s list. With lots of things to spot, the latest title will follow Bear and his friends through the seasons as they prepare a “magical” party for Oak’s 500th birthday.
Williams said: “It’s astounding how far we’ve come since our first book published, and it’s lovely to share our third anniversary of publishing with Grand Old Oak and their forest friends. If Bear would like to throw us a party as well, we’d be very grateful!”
