Magic Cat Publishing has signed three new books with Robert Macfarlane, which together will comprise the Night Creatures trilogy. Each title will be accompanied by artworks from Luke Adam Hawker.
Jenny Broom bought world English-language rights from Jessica Woollard at David Higham Associates. The signing coincides with the release of Macfarlane’s first book with Magic Cat, The World to Come, out on 3rd October.
The first title in the trilogy, Glow Worm, which will be published in October 2025, follows a “light-seeking child who one winter night discovers a meadow illuminated by glow-worms”.
Macfarlane said: “Luke’s talents as an artist blow my mind. Watching him work is mesmerising to me: the speed and intricacy of his making is about as close to sorcery as I’ve seen. I feel incredibly lucky to be weaving these three night-books into being with Luke – and to be published by the brilliant Magic Cat.”
Hawker added: “To embark on a trilogy with such a powerful and unique concept is any creative’s dream. To also find myself alongside such a talent as Robert Macfarlane, whose writing ability is only rivalled by his capacity to listen, is truly inspiring. Magic Cat is the perfect publisher for such a forward-thinking project.”
Publisher Broom commented: “Robert and Luke are, quite simply, once-in-a-generation talents. Witnessing this book come into existence is a great privilege and I’ll be forever grateful that they trusted us with this project.”
