Magpie, an imprint of Oneworld, has snapped up two books from British-Nigerian author Onyi Nwabineli in a "significant" deal on exclusive submission.
Publisher Juliet Mabey acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, including audio, from Nora Rawn, rights manager at Harlequin, HarperCollins US on behalf of Amy St Johnston at Aitken Alexander Associates. Allow Me to Introduce Myself, the first book in the deal, will be published as Magpie’s "superlead" title in May 2024 with an "extensive" author tour and marketing campaign.
St Johnston commented: "With Onyi’s characteristic wit and tenderness, Allow Me to Introduce Myself offers razor-sharp insight into the insidiousness of social media and the fragility of family, and I can’t wait for readers to get their hands on it."
The synopsis says: "Anuri’s stepmother, Ophelia, built her business empire as an ‘mumfluencer’, documenting every moment of Anuri’s childhood and adolescence on her social media platforms. But when Anuri sees Ophelia beginning to prey on her younger sister, she decides it’s time to take back control. Ophelia, however, isn’t giving up without a fight."
Mabey said: "I was hooked by this highly topical, cautionary story; it’s a brilliant page-turning ride through the seductive joys and pitfalls of today’s social media obsessions! We’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with Onyi on Allow Me to Introduce Myself, and can’t wait to see where she takes us next."
Nwabineli added: "Allow Me to Introduce Myself holds a mirror up to us all and our online consumption habits, and asks important questions about the autonomy of children in the social media age."
