Manchester University Press has scooped The Island Book of Records 1959-1968, a documentation of an "irreplaceable span of music history", edited by Neil Storey, the record label’s former head of press.
Editorial director Emma Brennan acquired world all-language rights directly from Storey. The vinyl-sized volume will be published on 3rd October 2023 with the second volume, covering the years 1969 to 1970, to follow in October 2024.
Together, both volumes will "represent the entire compendium of Island’s records" and will situate the record label within the sociopolitical events at the time. The Island Book of Records 1959-1968 will include interviews with the Island Records founder Chris Blackwell and former Island staff members, alongside photographers Dick Polack, John Benton-Harris and Gered Mankowitz FRPS providing the stories behind the records and their artwork.
The cover was designed by Jayne Gould, former creative director of Associated Newspapers, design director for News Corp and art director at Tatler.
