Manilla Press, an imprint of Bonnier Books UK, has acquired a “dazzling” exploration of female friendship, desire, and freedom by debut author Rowan Beaird.
Publishing director Sophie Orme acquired UK and Commonwealth English language rights excluding Canada to The Divorcées from Kerry Nordling at St Martin’s Press. It will will be published in hardback, audiobook and e-book on 28th March 2024.
The synopsis reads: “In 1951, unhappiness is hardly grounds for divorce – except at the divorce ranches of Reno, Nevada. Here women from different backgrounds live together for the six weeks it will take to earn their freedom. Six weeks of fun, friendship, casinos and flirting with cowboys. Six weeks to discover who they could become. And if their new friends are who they say they are…”
Beaird said: “I’m so happy that The Divorcées has a UK home with the incredible team at Bonnier Books UK. From dark casinos to sun-soaked pools, Reno in the 1950s was a fascinating time and place in America’s history, and I’m excited for readers overseas to experience the desires, glamour, and mystery of this era.”
Orme said: “The Divorcées is completely irresistible – a captivating, unsettling read, brimming with atmosphere and depicting such a fascinating setting and moment in history for women. Rowan is a hugely talented author."
