Mantle has landed Charlotte Mendelson’s new novel, Wife.
Publisher Maria Rejt acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Peter Straus at Rogers, Coleridge and White. It will publish on 8th August 2024 as a lead title in hardback, e-book and audiobook.
The synopsis says: “When Zoe moves in with Penny, their relationship looks perfect; after all, everyone wants a wife. But this is the story of how love can become a disaster.”
Rejt said: “Wife is a beautifully observed and coruscating novel about the joys of passionate love and motherhood, about those left in its wake when passion curdles and the choices that have to be made when romantic love is no longer enough. Set in the world of London academia, both past and present, it is a queer love story that is heartbreaking and funny, profound and gripping, as it takes the reader from the end of a relationship to its beginning, and back again…”
Mendelson added: “There’s nothing more fascinating than other people’s marriages, particularly when they start to go wrong and, in Wife, I wanted to explore those rumbles of distant thunder, the first seeds of destruction and, after the inevitable fall, who decides who has sinned. Maria is the wisest of editors and a true ally. I am lucky to have had her and her team behind me since my first novel.”
