Macmillan Children’s Books has landed a new workbook from Marcus Rashford, created with performance psychologist Katie Warriner and journalist Carl Anka, the award-winning team behind the number one bestseller You Are a Champion (MCB).
World rights were acquired by publisher Samantha Smith and senior commissioning editor Cate Augustin from Rachel Petty at The Blair Partnership. Aimed at children aged 10 to 14, The Marcus Rashford You Are a Champion Action Planner: 50 Activities to Achieve Your Dreams will publish in November 2022 in trade paperback format, to “give readers the space to write, create and make the book their own”.
The publisher said: “This interactive action planner is a must-have follow-up title for kids who are looking to achieve their dreams and be the best that they can be. Filled with brilliant advice and fun activities, this guide will show you how to become a champion in anything you put your mind to.”
Rashford commented: “It’s been amazing to see how well You Are a Champion and You Can Do It have been received by children all over the world and with the Action Planner children can take some of the learnings from the book and start to implement them in everyday life. My Action Planner is a safe space to start building on dreams, which can be difficult when all you see on your doorstep is struggle and challenge. I really want children to reach their potential, through brilliant advice and inspiring challenges, and of course I had to, once again, call upon Carl and Katie to partner with me to guarantee that was the outcome.”
Smith added: “The response to You Are a Champion was beyond anything we could have imagined. We’re so proud to be taking the fun and functional side of You Are a Champion a step further with this hands-on planner, written with the award-winning team of Carl Anka and expert Katie Warriner. This will guide young people through meaningful actions they can take to make their dreams a reality.”
You Are a Champion launched in May 2021 to huge success, instantly landing at number one in the children’s charts in its debut week. It has sold 265,734 copies in the UK and, according to the publisher, has achieved 450,000 global net sales. You Are a Champion won the British Book Awards’ overall Book of the Year, W H Smith’s Book of the Year, the Sainsbury’s Children’s Book Award, and was shortlisted for Waterstones Book of the Year. It was published by Macmillan in the US in June 2022 under the Feiwel and Friends imprint.
The sequel You Can Do It was published in July 2022, while Rashford’s debut middle-grade fiction book, The Breakfast Club Adventures, co-written with Alex Falase-Koya and illustrated by Marta Kissi, was published by Macmillan Children’s Books in May 2022. Through Nielsen BookScan in the UK, Rashford has sold 355,607 books in total for £1.92m.
