Mardle Books has signed The Rebel Pianist of Majdanek: A Holocaust Story of Music and Survival in a Nazi Death Camp by Nicola Pittam.
Editorial director Duncan Proudfoot acquired world all language rights directly from the author. The book will be published on 28th March 2024.
Inspired by the true story of piano prodigy Mosha Gebert, The Rebel Pianist of Majdanek is a fictionalised account of the life of Gebert, who, when imprisoned in the Majdanek concentration camp, refused to play the piano for the Nazi soldiers.
Pittam commented: "This book tells the heart-wrenching story of Mosha and how she survived life in the concentration camp. While this is a fictionalised account of Mosha’s story, this is sadly just one of millions of very real stories that happened during the Holocaust. I’m very grateful to Mardle Books for helping give Mosha and the other prisoners a voice and highlighting their courage and bravery."
Proudfoot added: "Nicola Pittam has drawn on the life of Polish piano prodigy, Mosha Gebert, who was incarcerated in Majdanek concentration camp, to craft a deeply moving Holocaust story of the redemptive power of music."
