Mardle Books has signed Dirty Briefs, a "shocking and hilarious" account of the pseudonymously named Dave Fendem’s journey through the legal profession.
Publisher Jo Sollis acquired English language rights from David Luxton at David Luxton Associates. The book will be published on 1st September in paperback, audio and e-book.
The synopsis reads: “For those who think that all barristers are high flyers blessed with fabulous incomes and sophisticated lives, this book will decisively re-inform you. It will dispel any myth that those we trust to steer the ship are any less maladjusted than the clients they represent. Unapologetically rude and irreverent, welcome to the real world of criminal barristers; an unruly place where nudity, misappropriation of sex toys and dirty protests are not just for the accused, and where judges’ discomfort brings widespread joy.”
"I sincerely hope I never need a good lawyer, but if I do I’m calling ’Dave’," said Sollis. "Even if I lose it will have been an event. His memoir is such an eye-opener into the real workings of the court system—both terrifying and hilarious.”
Fendem commented: "I am sure, like me, you have wondered what it would be like to kick open the door to your boss’ office and brazenly pee on his yucca plant. We would never do it. It would be pure insanity. But occasionally there is a union of great minds that changes all of that; the schoolboy with the firework who happens on another with matches who says to him, ’go on, do it. I dare you. It will be fine.’"
"I have taken my experiences from the law, my journals from therapy, my rude and shocking stories that make me smile when I am down. I have laughed at others, potty-mouthed the bad guys, potty-mouthed the good guys, free in the knowledge that none of this will ever meet general circulation. I packed all of it in a firework. Enter Mardle Books. Three girls with the lighter that came up and said, ’go on, do it, I dare you’. A publisher whose courage, sense of humour and drive adds much-needed spark to the mundane."
