Mardle Books has signed Faithless by Seth Walker, an “inspiring” true story of poverty, exorcism and murder.
Publisher Jo Sollis acquired world all language rights from the author, for publication on 3rd February 2022 in hardback, audio and e-book.
Walker was raised in an extreme Christian household and entered theological college at the age of 20. By the age of 24 he was living and working in one of the most deprived housing estates in England. He served for 10 years and 163 days. The book starts with his suicide attempt and then charts the incidents that led him to that point.
The publisher explained: “Each chapter is based on a real episode from his ministry. He met a cult leader, fought with a wife beating alcoholic, performed an exorcism, made a visit to a haunted house, had an attempt on his life by a man who showed signs of being possessed and helped to rebuild a family after their baby died and their other children were taken into care.
“These incidents have one common thread. A young man, with little life experience struggling to find the right thing to do in some of the most desperate situations. All the time, his once boundless faith was dwindling, as logic and tragedy forced him to take a different path.
Walker said: “After years of healing, I have been able to open the door on some very dark places of my psyche. This account has been over 30 years in the making. I have chapters from back in 1988, written then as an attempt to earth the charged emotions generated from some of the situations I was in. I found that, sometimes, it takes the darkest of situations to bring out the best in people.”
Sollis added: “Seth’s life experience is so utterly unique that it makes compulsive reading. He offers a fascinating view of his personal struggles, of life from inside the church and from within a desperate community searching for help and hope wherever they can find it.”
