Pushkin Press is to publish Willem Anker’s "masterly" novel based on the life of 1700s Cape renegade Coenraad de Buys.
Buys: ’n Grensroman, which gained Anker four major literary prizes in Afrikaans, is to be published in English by Pushkin Press as Red Dog in 2018.
Author and translator Michiel Heyns will be responsible for the English translation, which will also be published in South Africa by Kwela.
Daniel Seton, commissioning editor at Pushkin Press, said: "Red Dog is a brilliant, fiercely powerful 'African Western' – a wild, epic tale that has won comparisons to the work of Cormac McCarthy. We're absolutely delighted to be adding this exceptional novel to the Pushkin list."
Seton acquired World English rights excluding South Africa from Kwela Books, an imprint of NB Publishers.
A Dutch translation will be published by Uitgeverij Podium in April 2017.
