In the autumn Macmillan Children’s Books will publish a poetry anthology compiled by Allie Esiri, the writer and former actor behind poetry anthology The Love Book (Square Peg) and the app iF Poems, developed by Chickworks.
A Poem for Every Night of the Year will be a family-focused collection of 366 poems, one for every day of the year (including leap years), featuring classic poems from poets including W B Yeats, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Christina Rossetti, as well as more recent writers such as Roger McGough, Kate Tempest and Benjamin Zephaniah. The poem for 30th January, for example is “On a Quiet Conscience” by Charles I, who was executed on that date in 1649 by the Republican Party.
Esiri (above) is also organising a recital night at the National Theatre, where actors such as Helena Bonham Carter and Helen McCrory will perform the poems.
A Poem for Every Night of the Year will be released on 8th September, priced at £14.99. Publishing rights were acquired by Gaby Morgan, editorial director of non-fiction and poetry at Macmillan Children’s Books.
