Hilary McKay’s next book for Macmillan Children’s Books (MCB) will be a contemporary fiction novel about two single parents who bring their children together in a mysterious, ivy-covered house.
Venetia Gosling, 6+ Publisher at Macmillan Children’s Books, acquired UK and Commonwealth print, digital and audio rights to The Time of Green Magic from Molly Ker Hawn at The Bent Agency. It will be published in the US by Margaret K. McElderry Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers.
The book, described as “a story of dark winter nights, a secret visitor, books which become doorways into other worlds and a house full of green magic”, will be published in hardback in September this year, a year on from McKay’s Costa-winning novel The Skylarks' War.
“We couldn't be prouder to publish Hilary McKay on the Macmillan Children's Books' list and are so delighted to have a new book from her”, commented Venetia Gosling. “The Time of Green Magic is a completely enchanting new novel and I can't wait for others to read it and be transported as I was. It is a unique story from one of the finest children's writers working today.”
Gosling has also acquired McKay’s backlist trilogy ‘The Exiles’, first released in 1991 by Victor Gollancz Ltd, and will publish in May this year. All the books will feature a cover design by Dawn Cooper, who also illustrated The Skylarks' War.
