Amazon Studios has optioned St. Mary’s Catholic School Presents the Vagina Monologues (Penguin) by Flynn Meaney for film.
Described as “a hilarious and refreshing sex positive novel, with timely messages about feminism, consent and sexual health. ‘Pitch Perfect’ with priests”. St. Mary’s Catholic School Presents the Vagina Monologues is due to be published in June 2020.
Amazon Studios struck the deal for film rights with Emily Hayward-Whitlock, who represented the author on behalf of Gemma Cooper at The Bent Agency.
The synopsis explains: “Alex is a rebel from the tip of her purple fauxhawk to the toes of her biker boots, and has tried everything she can think of to get expelled from her strict Catholic boarding school. Nothing has worked so far - but now, Alex has a new plan. Tired of the sexism she sees in every corner of St Mary's, Alex decides to stage the school's first ever production of ‘The Vagina Monologues’. Which is difficult, as no one else at St Mary’s can even bear to say the word 'vagina' out loud.”
Meaney, who has previously written YA books with Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, The Boy Recession and Bloodthirsty.
She said: "I am so excited by the idea of seeing the world of St. Mary’s and my characters come to life on screen! It would be incredible to watch actors portray Alex and Mary Kate and develop the feisty friendship dynamic between them.”
