Michael O’Mara Books has acquired a “tell-all” memoir on the menopause by Michelle Heaton.
Hot Flush: Motherhood, the Menopause and Me will trace the actress and singer’s path from pop stardom with Liberty X to how she dealt with the menopause at the early age of 35 after undergoing a double mastectomy and hysterectomy to reduce the risk of cancer caused by the BRCA gene mutation.
World English language rights were acquired by Louise Dixon, senior editorial director at Michael O’Mara Books, from Jo Bell at Bell Lomax Moreton Literary Agency. The title will be published on 19th April 2018 in hardback with an r.r.p. of £18.99.
It is billed as “unfailingly honest and inspiring, the book will tackle the physical and emotional challenges of menopause as a wife and mother” and tackles the effects on Heaton's career, marriage and self-image, as well as offering tips on how to deal with the process.
Heaton said: “I entered the menopause early and it hit me hard. It is such an important and far-reaching subject. This book is for every woman out there – whatever age – to know that you are not alone.” She added: “By talking about it and searching for ways to make those difficult days a little easier, we can all help each other.”
Dixon said: “Menopause is a universal experience for women, and with over 13 million women in the UK experiencing the menopause at any one time, this book provides necessary and welcome attention to a little-discussed topic.”
She said that Heaton, also a TV personality and personal trainer, “tackles the subject with great frankness and good humour, offering a refreshingly candid and relatable take on her experiences”.
Bell described the memoir as a “touching and enormously insightful book for women of any age”. She said: “Just like a best friend, Hot Flush will stay with you through the changing times ahead.”
The BRCA gene mutation significantly increases a woman's chance of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer and is the reason Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie also had preventative breast cancer surgery, followed by ovarian cancer surgery.
