Monoray has bagged the rights to a "highly entertaining" book about tax in a six-way auction from anonymous author ‘The Rebel Accountant’.
UK Commonwealth rights to Taxtopia were acquired by publisher Jake Lingwood from Piers Blofeld at Sheil Land Associates. Taxtopia will publish 30th March in hardback.
Little is known about the Rebel Accountant bar the fact that he is a chartered tax adviser who has worked at major accountancy firms and start-ups in London and Australia.
The synopsis for his début title reads: “The Rebel Accountant has broken ranks to share his journey from clueless naïf to skilled tax consultant and in doing so blows the lid off the murky world of making the tax burdens of the ultra-wealthy disappear. In the topsy-turvy world of tax avoidance, you can get richer by buying a yacht, the world’s biggest exporter of coffee is Switzerland, and billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Donald Trump and the Duke of Westminster often pay less tax than you do.
“Written with sharp wit and over-brimming with inside secrets, the anonymous author shows us that not only does the global tax system encourage dubious practice which favours the rich but that it was specifically founded with that in mind.
“If you suspect that tax is a rigged game, a con, designed to fleece the little guy you are about to find out just how shockingly true that really is.”
The Rebel Accountant said: “I’ve written a book about tax that explains how it works and how you’re screwed over by it and what you can do about that screwing, written in a way that hopefully disguises the fact that you’re reading a book about tax at all. This was the challenge I set myself— to overcome the problem that everyone needs to read a book about tax but no one wants to. I hope that changes now.”
Lingwood added: “The Rebel Accountant has done the impossible and written a shocking, enlightening and important book about the injustice and economic madness of the tax system which at the same time is highly readable and thoroughly entertaining. A terrific piece of non-fiction, Taxtopia is a must-read and judging from the reactions of those who have seen early copies is set to be one of the most talked-about books of the year.”
The book has received praise from the likes of Piers Morgan, who described it as a “shocking, enraging, sometimes hilarious exposé of a tax system”, and Tom Peck, who called it “funny, clever and really quite brilliant”.
Taxtopia will be supported with a creative marketing campaign featuring interactive online quizzes, overdue invoice bookmarks, bookshop window stickers, an extensive proof mailing and teaser trailers.
