Moon + Bird, an imprint of Watkins Media Ltd, has scooped author-illustrator Claire Barker’s new children’s chapter book. Moon + Bird publisher Fiona Robertson has acquired world all-languages to Hettie Nettle’s Handbook for Hedgewitches from Julia Churchill from AM Heath Literary agency. The 6 to 9 age range book is set to be published in autumn 2025.
The book is a "timely blend of environmentalism and magic" and a brief synopsis reads: "Hettie’s secret notebook reveals the secrets of the Wild Wood and encourages readers to become guardians of nature and make magic of their own". It is perfect for "anyone interested in witches, fairies, environmentalism and connecting with nature".
Robertson said: "This is a very special acquisition for the Moon + Bird list, as it has allowed us to transition the love we have for the seasonal celebrations of the Wheel of the Year and environmental magic on our Watkins list to a younger audience. I love all the unique and totally magical elements Claire has included in the book, from hilarious interviews with Wild Wood celebrities, such as Jack Frost and the Sun and Moon, to spells of the month and enchanting tales with seasonal themes.
"We are so fortunate to add Claire to our Moon + Bird roster of authors. Her wonderfully imaginative text and beautiful illustrations have brought Hettie’s whole world to life. I love Hettie and I can’t wait for the world to meet her!"
Barker is also the author of the Picklewitch and Jack series (Faber) and Knitbone Pepper series (Usborne).
Barker said: "Creating Hettie Nettle’s charmed world has been an absolute joy. I couldn’t be more delighted that her practical, magical handbook has found the perfect home with Moon + Bird. I hope children—or, indeed, anyone who has ever wished on a dandelion clock—will love it."
Churchill said: "I’ve long admired Claire’s illustration work. It’s so charming and rich, conveying a deep love of the natural world and its dignity—as well as being adorable. Hettie Nettle is the perfect book to launch her author-illustrator career."
