Muswell Press has snared a “perceptive and evocative” debut to lead the publisher’s new LGBTQI list.
Publishers Sarah and Kate Beal acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to Golnoosh Nour’s The Ministry of Guidance from Rebecca Carter at Janklow Nesbit. The title will lead the publisher’s LGBTQI list series and will be published April 2020.
Set in Iran, Mecca, Germany and London The Ministry of Guidance highlights the lives of young LGBTQI Iranians who are questioning their sexuality and "vividley conveys the excitement and fear of challenging society’s norms” according to the synopsis.
The list is the first from editor-at-large Matt Bates who joined Muswell Press in October 2018 following three decades at WH Smith.
The Ministry of Guidance will be the first original title to appear on the LGBTQI list. Three reissued texts For Your Convenience by Paul Pry, The Lure by Felice Picano and The Gaudy Image by William Talsman will be published in November 2019. A reissue Children of the Sun by Max Schaefer will be added to the collection in May 2020.
Muswell Press said: “We are delighted to be publishing Golnoosh’s perceptive and evocative stories highlighting the lives of young LGBTQI Iranians. This is a brilliant debut collection which is contemporary, relevant and authentic.”
Nour added: “It is an absolute delight to be the first ‘original’ to be published by this new initiative from Muswell Press. I’m thrilled for my stories to be finding a new readership.”
Nour was born in Tehran and studied English Literature at Shahid Beheshti University, after which she moved to London to do a PhD in Literature and Creative Writing. Her debut poetry collection Sorrows of the Sun was published in 2017 by Skyscraper Publications under pseudonym Sogol Sur.
